Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello – The Ghost of Tom Joad

by David Spira

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine played The Ghost of Tom Joad with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band at a 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert.

The show had a lot of great moments, and couple pretty poor ones (I’m looking at you U2… Seriously they are incapable of playing other people’s songs).

Tom & Bruce’s performance was incredible. The vocals are great, the band is always spot-on, and the both Bruce and Tom’s guitar solos are fierce and passionate.

Make sure you crank up the volume.

I’m still amazed that Morello’s style mixes so well with the E Street Band. I wouldn’t have thought to pair the two on stage together.

This is one of my favorite Springsteen songs. And I like how Morello can work in with Bruce here. My only issue with this verison (and others where Morello plays) is the guitars just get too harsh, too biting for me. One of my favorite versions of this song is the original – more soft, with the harmonica. To me, that’s how this song should be. I appreciate the different approach, and I like Tom Morello, I just don’t dig this angry version.

The original is beautiful and understated.I like the Morello rendition because the anger and the passion translate well, and it feels genuine.

I am in my mid 40′s and no guitarist has inspired me since the great jimi Hendricks like Tom Morello does.He is truely one of the all time greats.I am amazed at the amount of emotion and passion he puts into every song he plays, which reminds me so much of Hendricks.

I agree Philip. Morello plays with such an incredible fire.
