Will Hologram Performances Become Common?
Tupac’s alive! Dre & Snoop Dog’s incredibly effective Coachella publicity stunt worked big-time. People can’t seem to shut the hell up about it.
I’ll admit, it was kind of cool. It was also cheesy, shameless and tasteless, but kind of cool.
The big question that more than a few people have asked me is, “Will we see this become a new trend in ‘live’ music?” Will people actually pay money to sit in a theater and watch a projection of a dead performer?
My guess is to a certain extent, yes.
Lots of people are already willing to pay a great deal of money to watch Britney Spears lip-sink and dance without her pants on. This is just one more step in the same direction.
Nostalgia can be a powerful force, and I wouldn’t be shocked if there were a good number of people who would want to see Tupac, Elvis or Michael Jackson on a stage again… Even if it’s soulless.
Someone’s Going to Try
This is inevitable. It’s what big companies do.
Here’s how the meeting will go:
Director of BS: “This innovative Tupac Hologram idea worked really well for Dre. It had millions of views in no time. Let’s copy it…”
Vice President of BS: “We’re not copying Dre. We’re benchmarking against him. Our’s is going to be super innovative too. After all our brand is hip and with it.”
Director of BS: ”Great, I’ll ring up someone to throw money at to make this thing work.”
Vice President of BS: “It’s going to be great! Finally my kids will appreciate why I’m never home to tuck them in.”
What our intrepid business leaders won’t realize is that there will be dozens of these conversations happening, and this is going to get real old, real fast.
Also, “cool” is a diminishing asset. By that I mean, when a person looks at something and says, “Wow, that’s really cool,” it’s all downhill from there. The second time that person looks at the same thing, she’ll say, “Yeah, that thing’s still pretty cool.” The third time she looks at it, she’ll be bored. Cool never lasts.
So, what are we left with?
This just might work for a dead artist who is incredibly popular. I’m betting that one of these hologram shows becomes a fixture in Las Vegas, or Atlantic City. “Come to the Trump Blah Blah Blah Hotel Casino & Resort to see Michael Jackson.” You know it’s going to be a Trump establishment.
However there won’t be many successes; especially longterm.
This just won’t work for Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Pantera, The Doors, or Robert Johnson. Holograms don’t have soul. They can’t improvise, and they sure as hell can’t replicate the kind of raw emotional power that comes from being there at that fleeting beautiful moment, when a musician does something that changes you in a way you never thought possible. That moment won’t happen at the next show. They will have their own moment… Or maybe they won’t.
There’s something magical about seeing a passionate performance. Watching and hearing a musician pour their heart out through their instrument. Hologram Tupac can’t do that.
But I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing Hologram Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve sometime in the near future. Hologram Dick can will have an almost life-like conversation with that Seacrest robot.
And for the record, holograms of famous people is ridiculously Futurama-esque.

Best of Funny Christmas Movies, TV & Music
Surviving another month in the “holiday spirit” echo chamber made me ponder, “Which of these movies, television episodes, and songs do I actually enjoy?”
Best Christmas Movie
Winner
Die Hard (1988) - ”Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.” It’s a tale of redemption set on Christmas. That makes it a Christmas movie. Deal with it.
Runner-up
Elf (2003) – Everyone likes this movie. If you don’t I recon you might be one of those damned communists.
Best Christmas Television Episode
Winner
South Park – Woodland Critter Christmas (Season 8, Episode 14, 2004) – Stan helps some adorable Woodland Critters give birth to their savior. Insanity ensues. This isn’t for the faint of heart, or for young children.
Runner-up
Futurama – Xmas Story (Season 2, Episode 8 1999) – 1,000 years in the future, a robotic santa (John Goodman) distributes gifts on Xmas. Robot Santa’s behavior standards were set too high in the factory and he judges everyone as naughty… And tried to murder them for their misdeeds.
Best Christmas Song
Winner
O Holy Night – Matt Mulholland - Be sure to read the description of this song, and stick around for the crescendo at the end; Mulholland has exceptional vocal range.
Runner-up
The Night Santa Went Crazy - Weird Al Yankovic
Happy Holidays!
Arrested Development Returning!
Of the many cancellation atrocities committed by Fox, the termination of Arrested Development is one of the worst (next to Firefly).
After nearly six years off the air, the Bluth family is returning with new television episodes and a movie, with their very specific brand of uncomfortable humor. In doing so Arrested Development will join the ever-growing list of excellent shows that Fox prematurely cancelled, only to bring them back in some form. That list includes:
- Firefly
- Futurama
- Family Guy
“Series star Will Arnett seconded Hurwitz’s pledge on his Twitter feed, @arnettwill, while, er, standing next to co-star Jason Bateman: ‘I’m peeing with @batemanjason at the moment … and we can confirm that we are going to make new AD eps and a movie.’”
Maybe one day we will see new episodes of The Tick, Dollhouse, Human Target & Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles… But I’m not going to hold my breath.
At the moment, Fox isn’t confirming the resurrection of Arrested Development. If this doesn’t happen, I will be pissed.

“Good News Everyone” The Futurama Cast Will Return!

"Good news everyone!"
20th (30th) Century Fox has finally signed the entire cast of Futurama. No substitute voice actors.
My favorite unapologetically geeky show is coming back! Hopefully it will still be good.
Futurama Returning, with New Voice Actors?!?
Fox is set to bring the geek classic Futurama back to TV. They have signed-on for 26 new episodes that should begin airing in mid 2010.
The catch…
Apparently Fox hit a wall negotiating with the original voice actors, and have putout a casting call for replacements.
I’ve gotten emails from quite a few people about this one. The people I’ve spoken to about the prospect of Futurama without Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille seem pretty angry.

I can’t say that I am thrilled about the idea, and I love Futurama.
However, something tells me Fox will work things out with the employees of Planet Express.
The Greatest Quasi-Legal Site Ever!
Surf the Channel is an insanely cool web site.
Basically, it directs you to the 1 million plus streaming videos that are linked to the site.
They have tons movies, television shows, and videos of concert performances.
From North by Northwest to The Dark Knight, The West Wing to Futurama, documentaries to blistering performances by the band Dream Theater, they’ve got more videos than you’ve got time to watch (However they don’t have the bat-nipple laden Batman & Robin).
They don’t have everything, and they don’t always have every episode of the television shows that are available on the site, but there is a lot there.
It’s also ridiculously easy to use. The videos work just like YouTube (Actually some of the videos come from YouTube).

You’re probably wondering, “How can this be legal? “
As I understand, it wouldn’t be if the streaming videos were hosted on servers in the United States. Instead they are hosted on servers in countries that do not honor US copyright law.
The bottom-line is that it isn’t illegal for you to use the site. It isn’t illegal for you to watch the videos. It only becomes illegal if you copy the video in any way like taking a screens shot.
What I enjoy most about it are watching old shows that haven’t been brought to DVD.
If you want to use this service, I recommend doing it sooner than later. I have no doubt that the legal sharks are already circling this site.
This may seem like a departure from my anti-piracy stance, it is… but only a little. I still believe that copyrights should be respected and piracy should be limited. However, given that this isn’t illegal and the owners of the copyrights do seem to have the opportunity to have their content unlinked from Surf the Channel, I have no problems posting this.
If you made it to the end of this post without exiting to checkout Surf The Channel, click here now.
The Geek Whisperer’s Holiday Buyers Guide
Here are some gift ideas that will put a smile on the face of that special geek in your life (in no particular order).
· Roll of Duct Tape – Nothing says “I love you and I want you to live a long happy life,” like duct tape. Any true geek understands the value of a good roll of duct tape.
· Speck Cases for Apple Products – in my opinion, these are the best laptop cases on the market. If your geek has a Mac notebook, you can’t go wrong with this one (they also make many other great cases for other non-Apple products).
· Movies – This is an obvious one: The Dark Knight (Arriving in stores on 12/9). If you want to go with something more old-school, funny, and quirky, pick up Real Genius (1985).
· Books – Anything by Neil Gaiman.
· Music – Here are a few albums from different genres that have stood out to me this year:
o David Gilmore Live from Gdansk – Guitarist and vocalist from Pink Floyd puts on an incredible concert that spans his solo and Pink Floyd careers. Amazing album!
o Scream Hello, Everything is Always Still Happening – This genre-spanning band has done some great things this year. Their new album is by far the most interesting thing I have put in my CD player in 2008. I strongly recommend this album.
o Jackson Browne, Solo Acoustic Volume 2 – For the acoustic lover, Jackson Browne does a beautiful job with this compilation. Don’t bother with his new studio album Time the Conqueror. Pick this one up instead (vol. 1 is great too).
o AC/DC, Black Ice – This is just good old-fashioned rock and roll. It won’t change your life, but it’s a fun ride.
· Comics – A few great trade paperbacks (comic compilations):
o Watchmen – If your geek hasn’t read this, he/she should before the movie is released in March. This is widely considered one of, if not the best, comic of all times.
o Ex Machina – The extremely compelling story of a super-powered Mayor of New York City. The story takes place in a world that is very similar to ours, and is filled with intelligent dialogue, and brilliant plot twists (There are multiple books to this one, start with book 1).
· Video Games – Mortal Kombat vs. DC, Fable 2 (both of these are more mature titles). Also, Guitar Hero World Tour & Rock Band 2.
· Fender Strat Squire Pack – This beginner electric guitar/ amplifier pack has everything your geek needs to learn how to play guitar (not just Guitar Hero). They run between $150 – $250 depending on the pack. This is an excellent way to get your feet wet and see if you like playing without spending a ton of money.
· TV on DVD – Some must watch TV shows for any geek:
o Futurama (Seasons 1 to 4) – The pinnacle of geek shows. This show is funny as hell and filled with geek humor (a post will be coming in the future about why this is the best geek show of all time)
o Mad Men (Season 1) – Quite frankly, this is the best, most intelligent show on television.
Happy Thanksgiving!
