Arrested Development Returning!

Of the many cancellation atrocities committed by Fox, the termination of Arrested Development is one of the worst (next to Firefly).

After nearly six years off the air, the Bluth family is returning with new television episodes and a movie, with their very specific brand of uncomfortable humor. In doing so Arrested Development will join the ever-growing list of excellent shows that Fox prematurely cancelled, only to bring them back in some form. That list includes:

  • Firefly
  • Futurama
  • Family Guy

“Series star Will Arnett seconded Hurwitz’s pledge on his Twitter feed, @arnettwill, while, er, standing next to co-star Jason Bateman: ‘I’m peeing with @batemanjason at the moment … and we can confirm that we are going to make new AD eps and a movie.’”

Maybe one day we will see new episodes of The Tick, Dollhouse, Human Target & Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles… But I’m not going to hold my breath.

At the moment, Fox isn’t confirming the resurrection of Arrested Development. If this doesn’t happen, I will be pissed.

Behold the Pistol Shrimp

This shrimp can fire a blast of bubbles from its claw that “momentarily reach the temperature of the Sun!”

They don’t specify which part of the Sun, but it’s still crazy hot. How cool is that?

“The Pistol Shrimp” would have made an excellent villain for the Tick.

Limiting Damage to Your Phone or Laptop

In the immortal words of The Tick: “Gravity is a harsh mistress.”

When using a flip phone, laptop, or any other device with a hinge, the closed position is always safest during a fall.

The more compact, closed position will almost always take a fall better than the open position. This has to do with a number of factors including:

Smaller surface area – there is less exposed that can break.

Screen exposure – it is less likely that the screen will crack if it isn’t stuck directly.

Self-reinforcement – the more compact, closed position will typically allow the devices parts to reinforce themselves a bit more.

The bottom-line - Keep your laptop or phone closed when you aren’t using it. Especially if it is in a precarious position.

This won’t necessarily save your device, but it will increase the odds of it surviving a fall.

If you drop you device in water, follow these instructions:

Practice safe computing by not dropping the delicate electronics!

The Tick!

The live action television adaptation of “The Tick” (not to be confused with the cartoon which was also great) was an incredibly short-lived and excellent show. Until recently I was pretty sure that the only two people who watched it when it aired were my father and myself.

It turns out that it has a cult following and I’m not the only person who loves that show.

Staring Patrick Warburton, best known for playing Puddy on “Seinfeld,” Tick is an exceptionally strong superhero, but the guy is as dense as uranium. He is the aloof hero with a heart of gold.

Take a look at this short clip for a taste of the sweet comedic justice that the Tick administers by the bucket:

If you liked that, check out this heavily edited mini-episode:

Still want more? Check out all nine episodes on DVD. Watch as the Tick battles classic villains like the Red Scare (a robot that was the best technology available to the Soviets in the late 1970′s), the Terror (the worst villain in history… except he’s elderly now), and Apocalypse Cow (and her fire shooting udders).

“The Tick” was a brilliant lampooning of the superhero genre, before superhero movies and TV shows became common. The show was a breath of fresh-air and one of the many brilliant programs that the geniuses running FOX canned in the early 2000′s. There aren’t many episodes out there, but it is a must watch for any proper comic geek.
