DC/ Warner Brothers is Having a Bad Week
Some folks from DC & Warner Brothers rejected Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman movie script a few years ago.
I’m betting those people are having a rough week right about now.
The Avengers was eff-ing awesome. A detailed review is coming later.
Best of The Geek Whisperer (3 Year Blogiversary)
I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for three years (999 posts)! To celebrate, I skimmed through my archive for the first time in three years, and it brought back a lot of memories.
Join me on a brief and mildly narcissistic trip through some of my favorite blogging memories:
- Arguably my best post, at least from an academic perspective is Wonder Woman: The Super Secret & Kinky Origin of a Feminist Icon. Derived from a portion my undergraduate thesis, this post has been cited in a few academic papers, and according to my web analytics has been frequently referenced on some BDSM discussion boards. I am after-all here to educate and entertain.
- My most popular single day post dates back to April Fool’s Day 2010. I collaborated with a mystery designer to introduce the world to the iProbe; it’s still my favorite post.
- In one of TGW’s stranger episodes, guitar legend Peter Frampton stopped by to comment on a post after I berated him for a very disrespectful performance at The Stone Pony.
- When I first started The Geek Whisperer, I wanted to define the difference between geeks & nerds… But I found the task painfully difficult and subsequently spent two and a half years pondering the question before I wrote Geek vs. Nerd vs. Dork.
- And last but not least, I was (and still am) cited in a Wikipedia article on Firefly/ Serenity; my favorite scifi universe.
Never forget to practice safe computing.
“Wonder Woman: Bondage” The Comic That Won’t Be
Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool wrote:
“DC Comics never saw this image. Neither Bill Sienkiewicz nor Frank Miller intended it to go public. But when it was sold, despite assurances that it wouldn’t go online, somewhere along the line, it got sold to someone who didn’t know about that requirement. And it was recently spotted by DC Women Kicking Ass, though the above visual is a higher res version.”
Sienkiewicz told Bleeding Cool:
Frank and I were jazzed about working together again. We were up for doing another series and churning the waters on on some old DC character, as he’d done with Dark Knight.
Wonder Woman seemed like a pretty good choice. She been simultaneously revered and handled poorly in some incarnations. To me she’s always been a ‘”symbol” more than a character that has been well-utilized in a story context. The most interesting stuff was the earliest – and felt the ripest for revisiting.
The fact that her creator William Marston also created the precursor to the lie detector and was into bondage lent a weird kinky vibe and made the idea of mucking with her and her origin a potentially fun trip.
The image was done by me to visually test the water, so to speak and my own comfort level, if not everyone else’s, about how far it could be pushed. I did some others that were far more extreme, no one has seen those, this one was relatively tame by comparison. Still it was perhaps a bit over the top, but I think Frank and I invited that. So was the idea for the series in very basic broad stroke discussions between Frank and I , with some input from then-DC editor Bob Schreck. The piece was never intended to be seen by anyone else, but of course , someone bought the original , and despite assurances from everyone who had seen the piece that they would not pass it along ( I should have known better, it was too provocative NOT to make the rounds)… ah well, so it goes.
But as for actually doing the series – who knows?
This series won’t see the light of day because DC cleansed the more tawdry elements of Wonder Woman from the comics (except for the costume). They also avoid talking about Wonder Woman’s very kinky history in recent documentaries.
The thing is, I’m not convinced that it would be a bad thing to return Wonder Woman to her roots. A good writer could tell a great story that really examines gender relations. It wouldn’t be for kids, but most comics aren’t.

Phil Jimenez Free Comic Book Day Sketches
This past Saturday was Free Comic Book Day.
Alterniverse-2 Comics (formerly known as Upstate Comics) in Lagrangeville, NY had comic artist extraordinaire Phil Jimenez sketching for customers. My buddy Pete sent me scans of some Jimenez’s sketches from the event.
Enjoy.

The Wonder Woman Costume Redesign Debacle
Wonder Woman was given a new costume about two weeks ago. The reaction from fans has been mixed, while the reaction from people who like seeing the American flag on everything has been terrible.
Fox News decided that they needed to elevate the debate:
Wonder Woman may have finally been given a pair of pants, but has she been stripped of her patriotism?
Are you kidding?
She isn’t wearing star-spangled underwear, so that is an issue of patriotism.
Let’s be real. The new costume is alright. The jacket is lame, and the boots are a little odd, but the costume is alright.
Now, even if you accept that this is a valid, newsworthy political issue, her old costume violated the US Flag Code left and right. The patriotic hardliners who really care about the politics of Wonder Woman’s undies should probably take that into account.
Joss Whedon Directing “The Avengers” Movie
Joss Whedon, the man behind Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is directing the Marvel super hero mega movie, The Avengers.
Rumors of Whedon’s involvement have been around for a couple of months, but I didn’t want to get too excited until it was official. Whedon has a long and distinguished history of being royally screwed by producers and networks, so I didn’t want to get my hopes up (see Firefly, Dollhouse, and the Wonder Woman movie that never happened).
The Avengers will be the story of a super hero team comprised of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the Hulk (not Edward Norton), and possibly a few others as they battle some grand evil that will be revealed at a later date.
It’s going to be difficult to successfully manage a cast of characters like this, but Whedon has done it before. Firefly had nine key characters, and he successfully developed each and every one of them. His runs on team comics like the X-Men & Runaways were also incredibly compelling.
If anyone can make this work, it’s Joss Whedon.
The Avengers is due in theaters on May 4, 2012. [IMDB]
“first, let’s get you into something that won’t get me arrested for solicitation…”
Last night, instead of doing things like writing any number of Geek Whisperer posts I’ve been promising to David, I watched the new Wonder Woman animated feature. I thought it was great. Uplifting. Powerful. Pulsating…? Getting an image in your head? No, your other one. I’m talking about the penis. Oh, yes, because although it’s certainly an inspiration to little girls everywhere, what with the female empowerment and all, it’s also an inspiration to teenage boys’ genitals.

If only they drew it from the other side...

The only reason women wear layers is to taken them off

I know what you’re thinking. You’re shocked that I’m using DC characters in a sexually explicit blog post. But come on! Here you have the new version of Wonder Woman, and yet she’s never been so close to her original character. Remember David’s post about the perverse nature of her original arcs?
This movie really makes the innuendos for me…

Subtle innuendo?
I definitely recommend this movie for any fans and would be fans out there… but don’t show it to your 13 year old brother/nephew/son/etc. unless you want sticky socks in your washing machine.
****SPOILER****
This movie has zombie Amazons in it! Added Bonus!
