Joss Whedon, the man behind Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is directing the Marvel super hero mega movie, The Avengers.
Rumors of Whedon’s involvement have been around for a couple of months, but I didn’t want to get too excited until it was official. Whedon has a long and distinguished history of being royally screwed by producers and networks, so I didn’t want to get my hopes up (see Firefly, Dollhouse, and the Wonder Woman movie that never happened).
The Avengers will be the story of a super hero team comprised of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the Hulk (not Edward Norton), and possibly a few others as they battle some grand evil that will be revealed at a later date.
It’s going to be difficult to successfully manage a cast of characters like this, but Whedon has done it before. Firefly had nine key characters, and he successfully developed each and every one of them. His runs on team comics like the X-Men & Runaways were also incredibly compelling.
If anyone can make this work, it’s Joss Whedon.
The Avengers is due in theaters on May 4, 2012. [IMDB]
