Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits is a magnificent song. Released in 1985 it is the finale of an all-around excellent album of the same name.

Brothers in Arms isn’t a radio favorite, but it really is something special. Featuring Mark Knopfler on guitar and vocals, this song is quietly powerful both lyrically, and instrumentally. It slowly builds from a whisper, growing in intensity until it concludes with a passionate solo; each note sounds like it is being cried out of Knopfler’s guitar.

My favorite recording comes from Dire Straits’ performance at Nelson Mandela’s birthday in 1988. I recommend listening to it alone. Enjoy.
